I’m married to a technology junkie who is usually drooling over the next great gadget, but I can’t say that I am the same way. I’ve never been the type of gal that had to have the newest or shiniest of cell phones. I’m not one of the people that waited for hours in line to get the next iPhone…heck, I still use a Blackberry (which has the worst selection for downloadable apps available). I may not be a gadget junkie, but I will say that I love all the amazing apps that are out there. Especially the crafty ones!
While I wasn’t dying to have an iPhone, I wanted an iPod Touch so bad…just to have access to some of the amazing apps that I found & couldn’t use. Then Mr. Wonderful (being the super awesome husband that he is) got me an iPod Touch for my last birthday! So I’ve been a little app crazy ever since.
Ever since my birthday, I’ve been on the search for some of the best knitting (& crocheting) apps available…that were free. I’ve got to say that the search hasn’t been super easy, but I’ve found a few that I just have to share with anyone & everyone that loves knitting & technology.

I’m going to come out & say it…I’m a big fan of Lion Brand yarns & their patterns. It’s not the most high quality yarns available, but for a crafter on a budget it’s some of my most favorite yarn in my stash. One of the first searches I did was for an app from them & I was pleasantly surprised with everything they have bundled in this little app. I can search for patterns. Get information about those skeins of Lion Brand yarn that have recently lost their label. Find the nearest store that sells their yarn, no matter where I am. I love all the information they have put into this one app!

I have a confession to make. For as long as I can remember, I’ve always suffered from crafting ADD. This can really get me into trouble at the holidays, when I’m already scatterbrained by all the other planning that is going on. I wish that Ravelry had an app, because it’s helped me track my progress on all the WIPs going on around me. Even though they don’t plan on coming out with an app, KnitMinder Lite is a great substitute. I can track my stash. List my projects that are scattered from room to room, & bag to bag. Remember what size hooks & needles I have, which is great when you are shopping for a project & aren’t sure if you have all the tools you need.
Both of these apps made my holiday knitting a lot better. I could make notes on changes I made to the pattern, or mark where I had left off. And when I did feel like thumbing through my books to find the perfect hat pattern for a ‘hard to shop for teen’, I quickly found just the right project. Anything that can make crafting time that much better is great in my book!
